Who We Are, What We Do
The McDonough Housing Authority (MHA) is a municipal corporation created by statute, formed in 1957. MHA is governed by a six-member Board of Commissioners who is appointed by the Mayor, including one public housing resident. MHA is funded entirely by federal sources from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD). MHA has approximately five full-time employees.
The McDonough Housing Authority owns and operates 118 units of conventional public housing located at three sites:
* Lamar Point, located off Lewis Street, has 39 apartments:
* 10 one-bedroom
* 10 two-bedroom
* 15 three-bedroom
* 4 four-bedroom apartments
* Hooten Street Apartments located on Hooten Street has 28 apartments consisting of:
* 20 one-bedroom
* 6 two-bedrooms
* 2 three-bedrooms.
* Weaver-Thurman Crossing has 51 apartments, located off Church Circle, with:
* 8 one-bedroom
* 24 two-bedroom
* 10 three-bedroom
* 9 four-bedroom apartments.
Our apartments are all brick construction, with central heat and air conditioning. The interior of the units are fitted with Energy Star-rated appliances. Washer and dryer connections come standard at Lamar Point and Weaver-Thurman Crossing, while only the two- and three-bedroom apartments have washer hookups at Hooten Street Apartments. All of our housing developments are sited on grassy or wooded settings, and are in close proximity to employment centers, religious and educational institutions, and recreational and cultural amenities.
The Housing Authority also operates a 501(c)(3), the Henry County Development Corporation, that it uses to facilitate non-federal development activities, including bond financing and mixed-finance partnerships. The agency’s mission is to provide safe, sanitary, affordable housing within the jurisdiction we serve, which extends in a ten-mile radius around the City of McDonough, falling into three Congressional Districts: the 3rd, 10th, and 13th Districts.
MHA has a newly renovated facility known as the J. Elaine Moore Enrichment Center of MHA. The building was the authority’s first office space, and then was converted into a police substation and also a food pantry for the residents. This facility offers self-sufficiency activities for the residents to include tutoring services, job readiness skills, life skills, along with more workshops to help promote self-sufficiency for the residents we serve. MHA received grant funds from the Henry County, GA Community Development Block (CDBG) program to assist with the renovations of this beautiful facility.
The McDonough Housing Authority operates ONLY public housing – Section 8 in Henry County is run through the Georgia Department of Community Affairs at: (404) 679-4940. Public housing units are owned by MHA and rented to qualified applicants. Residents pay 30% of their household income or flat rents. We serve approximately 650 clients and partners, including residents and applicants, contractors, developers, elected officials and management staff.
